Front Chain Sprocket (15T) for Honda CT90 - "Trail 90" Motorcycles

Why You Need This

Sprockets are an essential, ongoing wear item for vintage motorcycles like the Honda CT90 K0-K8; CT90 '78-'79. The front chain sprocket on the CT90 is very unique as it works in conjunction with the dual range gear box. Since the CT90 uses an auto clutch, hard engine braking is happening constantly when slowing down. This takes a toll on all the drive chain assembly, especially the front sprocket.  Over time, the front sprocket can wear down, especially if the previous owner did not maintain proper chain tension or lubrication. Lack of maintenance is common on the CT90 since the sprocket inspection and replacement is more difficult than most other bikes. Don't be surprised if the front sprocket on your Trail 90 is worn way beyond belief.

Overly worn sprockets often show signs of wear such as thin, sharp and asymmetrical teeth (see photo). When these symptoms appear, it's time to replace your worn sprocket. This 15-tooth sprocket is a direct replacement for the original factory sprocket on the Honda Trail 90, which uses a 428 pitch drive chain. Replacement will restore smooth operation and keep your ride in top shape.

*Note: This front chain sprocket fits Honda CT90K0 models from Engine SN 122551 & up that utilize the dual range gear box.

Installation Tip

Installation requires removal of the sub-trasmission cover and gears as well as the entire left side cover the of the engine (pick up an impact driver if you don't have one already). You'll need at least a service gasket kit  to do the job correctly. While you are there we suggest also changing the oil seals, since the CT90 uses two on either side of the front sprocket. Allen head bolts swap would also be in order when this service work is performed.  We suggest to do this when you also plan to do an oil change.

Spread a generous amount of engine oil on the inner brass bushing before installing the sprocket. It's also a good idea to lightly coat the inner lips of the oil seals with oil before pushing the sprocket through, to prevent any damage or tearing.

When installing a new front sprocket, be sure to check the condition and wear of your rear sprocket and drive chain. It's generally recommended to replace all three at the same time.
