Honda CT90 / Trail 90 Ignition Contact Point
Exact ignition timing is crucial for easy starting and optimal engine performance on your Honda CT90 / Trail 90. Worn or pitted contact points can prevent the engine from running to its full capability. Replacing them with a new set featuring fresh surfaces will ensure reliable ignition timing.
The required contact points depend on the points plate installed in your CT90 / Trail 90. Honda used two different styles concurrently during production.
Inspect the advance mechanism behind the points plate to ensure it operates smoothly. Set the contact points gap to 0.012" at the highest mark of the points cam (a small tick mark on the outer circumference may require removing the retaining bolt and washer to view). At Common Motor, we use a test light (not a strobe timing light) to set the points timing. Once the gap is set, adjust the timing accordingly and dab a small amount of grease on the points cam to extend the life of the rubbing blocks.
