Thread restorers aka thread chasers are an excellent addition to any toolbox. They allow you to clean debris, corrosion, and rust off of bolt threads and to reform lightly damaged or cross-threaded studs or fasteners. Each individual thread chaser is made of hardened, cadmium-plated steel and is sized for use with a 13mm, 17mm, or 19mm wrench. NOTE: Thread chasers are for cleaning or restoring lightly damaged threads on metric fasteners only. Do not use this tool to cut new threads or repair heavily damaged or stripped threads. While box end wrenches can be used with these thread chasers, we recommend using a proper size 6 point socket instead.
Use a touch of light oil on the tool when using it to clean / restore threads. This is a tool that requires feel for proper use, and mild resistance is normal. Never force a chaser, or you may cause more damage than good. For every 2 full turns in, reverse the chaser by 1/2 turn to break any debris loose and collect in the flutes of the chaser. Take your time and remove and clean frequently; it may take more than one pass to fully clean the threads of a given fastener. Clean the chaser with a stiff bottle brush.
