Motorcycle Tire Bead Holder — "The Outer Rim"
Anyone who’s mounted a tire knows the fight: you get the first stretch of bead over the rim, move down to work the next section, and the part you just seated pops right back off. "The Outer Rim" tire bead holder pins that first section down so it stays put while you work the rest of the bead on.
Why You Need This
We came across a tool like this on a road trip years ago, found it ridiculously handy, and made our own version. It clamps the leading edge of the bead down in the rim well so it can’t climb back over the lip while you pry — which turns a two-steps-forward, one-step-back wrestling match into a steady job. It’s especially welcome when you’re changing a tube on the side of the road with shorty levers.

How to Use It
Difficulty: Beginner
- With the tube installed and the valve stem threaded through the rim, pry the first section of tire bead over the rim.
- Slide the open end of the bead holder onto the rim edge over that section, and clamp it down hand-tight with the nylon thumb screw.
- Lubricate the bead and work the rest of it over the rim until the tire is fully seated.
Start at least 90° away from the valve stem. The area right around the stem is the hardest place to pry the last bit of bead over, so we usually start on the opposite side and finish away from the stem.

Can I buy just the bead holder?

Will it scratch my rim?
No. It clamps to the rim edge with a nylon thumb screw, so the contact point is plastic, not bare metal — it won’t mar the rim.
Why start away from the valve stem?
The bead is toughest to work right around the valve stem. If you leave that spot for last it can be a real fight, so starting at least 90° away — we go opposite the stem — keeps the hardest area from being your final move.
