Part: Posi-Tap Wire Splice Electrical Connectors
Applications Supported:
Why You Need This: Every now and then, the situation arises that an electrical device needs to be connected or "tapped" into an existing wiring harness. The best way to make such a mod is to strip, splice and solder the new wires to the existing ones. However, we know that almost never happens and that we want a quick and simple solution. The T-tap or clam shell type wire tap connectors have been on the market for years, but are real junk as they always seems to wiggle loose and are permanent once installed.
We recently stumbled across Posi-Tap wire connectors when looking for an easy to use connector to include with our a Shockwave ignition system. These may be the best wire taps ever made and they are the best ones we have ever used. Posi-Taps provide a quick, easy and semi-permanent way to splice a new wire into an existing harness. No special tools are required to install, the Posi-Taps are re-useable, they stay tightly in place and if removed, the original wire is left in tact with minimal distortion (just a little hole that can be taped or touched up with silicone).
Sold in packs of 10, they work on any 14-16 gauge wire (factory Honda wiring harnesses are mostly 16 gauge). Regardless if you are cutting across the back roads on a CL350 or CL450 Scrambler, buzzing through the city on your CB360, CB350 or CB175 or even on that long haul road trip on your CB550 or CB750, having a handful of Posi-taps and Posi-locks in your tool kit will be a handy solution to any unforeseen wiring gremlins.

Installation Tip: There are two different ends on the Posi-Tap, the pointed end which pierces the wire to be tapped and the clamping end that connects to the new wire. It is easiest to install the Posi-Tap on the wire to be tapped first. Cradle the wire in the groove of the threaded cap holder (the larger cap) and screw the body of the Posi-tap in place where it is finger tight. Now install the wire of the new item to the body of the tap. Strip about 1/4" (6 mm) of insulation off each end of the wire, insert the threaded caps over the ends of the wire and slightly fan out the loose strands of wire. Do not twist the ends of the wire prior to installing them in the threaded cap. Install the cap and wire into the body of the lock and begin to thread the cap in place, while keeping pressure on the wire while tightening the cap to the body. Once snug, give the wire a gentle tug to see if it has locked properly, it should not move or pull out. If it does try again, you may need to strip just a hair more of insulation off the wire. The wires of the Honda wiring harnesses are 16 gauge, while the blue Posi-locks are the rated size we find using the Red Posi-Locks for single wire repairs works as well.
