Part: Spark Plug Thread Cleaner / Restorer / Chaser for M14 x 1.25 pitch threads.
Why You Need This: Since spark plugs are often taken in and out of a vintage Honda motorcycle engine, it is quite easy to mess up the spark plug threads in the cylinder head. Spark plugs should thread into a head easily by hand and just snugged lightly by a wrench. However, they tend to get over tightened, stuck in place or installed crooked (and then forced into place, which is called cross threading). You will know if and when it happens, and if you are vigilant you might be able to realign the threads without too much headache. The spark plug thread "chaser" (aka thread cleaner / thread restorer) is the FIRST tool to grab in the attempt to remedy. If you still have threads in the head casting there is a chance that they can be straightened out and cleaned up with our thread restorer tool. This is also the tool to use if a spark plug will thread into the head, but seems not turn smoothly with your fingers. If your spark plug hole is stripped out entirely it will need to have an insert installed for a proper repair, one of the many things we can do with our Cylinder Head Rebuild Service.
Made from hardened steel, thread size is M14 x 1.25. Uses a 3/8" drive ratchet or extension.
Usage Tip: The spark plug thread chaser is a tool that requires a gentle feel when using as it can cause damage if used with too much force. Lubricate the chaser with some white lithium grease and slowly thread it into the spark plug hole. Choke up on the ratchet handle as to not apply too much torque. Thread in a few turns, then back out a turn, this pulls any debris into the flat spots (flutes) on the chaser; the grease will stick any dirt or shavings in place on the tool. Then proceed forward, slowly with gentle turns and then backing out a bit. If you are doing this operation with the cylinder head still installed on the engine be mindful not to thread the tool all the way down through the spark plug hole, which can be difficult to re-aling to thead out. Remove the chaser and test your results with a spark plug.
