Speedometer not acting right? A common culprit is the speedometer cable. This cable connects the front wheel to the speedometer, and over time, its ends can break off, the cable can fray, or it may develop kinks. Any of these issues can lead to inaccurate speedometer readings.

Installation

Difficulty: Beginner

1. Carefully align the drive tab on the cable into the speedometer drive unit.
2. Route the cable up through the proper cable retainers on the factory front rim and into the headlight bucket.
3. Before attaching the cable, apply a bit of anti-seize compound to the threads on the speedometer drive housing where the cable will be screwed on.
4. Make sure that both ends of the cable are securely seated and hand tighten the knurled cable nuts. If using a K5 and later cable, reinstall the speedometer retaining screw with a dab of anti seize into the front wheel.

Which speedometer cable do I need for my CT90?

Honda went through several iterations of front drum brake wheel on the trail 90 models. The best way to know is to always match your new cable to your existing cable before installation. When ordering, refer to our compatibility notes in the product description. You will need to know your from VIN number and the K series of your CT90. If you do not know your K series, find that out right here.

Will this fix my speedometer?

Maybe. A few issues can happen with your speedometer. First, check if your speedometer drive is spinning when you spin the front wheel. If its not, something is wrong with the speedometer drive gear inside your front wheel. Next, if your speedometer needle is wobbling during driving then a new cable can fix that. An erratic needle can be caused by a cable that needs to be lubricated or one that is worn. If your speedometer needle still bounces around significantly or does not function at all after a fresh lubricated cable is installed, and you have checked that you have a functioning speedometer drive, then you have an issue with your gauge unit. The gauge would need to be replaced with a good condition used or new unit.
